Service In the Field

Lauren Soderland (Teen Feed)

I grew up in Seattle and have lived near the University District for over 15 years. I’ve always seen lots of homeless kids on University Avenue, but only really became aware why they were there when I moved back home in 2007. As it turns out, the University District is home to the majority of services for homeless and disadvantaged youth in Seattle. Great organizations provide shelter, counseling, case management, meals and outreach to some of the approximately 3,500 young people (under age 21) who are homeless in Seattle each night.  FULL STORY

I’m a teacher at the Rolling Hills Multiage Program in Fullerton, California. I work mostly with children ages 5-8. During the 2008-2009 school year I organized a community service project for our students called “Kids for Kenya”. Throughout the course of the school year my students, colleagues and I collected blankets, school supplies, clothing and shoes for children at the Limuru Home for Girls and the Narok Home for Boys in Kenya, East Africa. We worked together as a class to collect as many items as we could, and each Friday we sold popcorn to raise money for the children in Kenya. I had a kindergarten student who sent a letter to her family and friends asking for donations for this project, rather than gifts for her birthday; she asked that they still be wrapped so the kids in Kenya would have something to open.  FULL STORY

Lindsay Rogers (Global Citizen)

I committed my life to public service and the better part of the last decade to advocating for human rights and social justice among the world’s poorest and most oppressed people. As such I am frequently asked how one becomes involved in public service. I find often the most significant impact I have comes from the lessons I learned as a child.  FULL STORY
